Medicinal sage, from the Latin Salvia officinalis L. -
it is a species from the Lyme family. It grows mainly
in the Mediterranean regions, in countries such as
Albania, Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy, but is also found
here and there outside these areas.
It is cultivated in many countries around
the world. Its name comes from the Latin salvus meaning health.
Medicinal sage is a medicinal plant, known in antiquity
as a medicinal plant, and also magical.
Romans and Greeks used it as a remedy for
vision problems, memory loss and snake bites.
In the Middle Ages, it was used as a cure for fever,
colds, epilepsy, liver diseases and constipation.
It was believed to be an aphrodisiac. Arab scholars
claimed that eating it prolonged life, while in ancient
Rome, the harvest of sage was accompanied
by specific customs.
The medical raw material is Folium Salviae sage
leaves, they contain 2.5 to 3% of volatile oil, which
includes, among others. thujone, cineole, camphor
and pinene. Sage also contains tannins, flavonoids,
organic acids, bitterness, large amounts of vitamin
B1, vitamin PP, and carotenes and large
amounts of vitamin C.
Action: sage supports the digestive system, also
lowers blood sugar levels, and the infusions soothe
sore throats and skin. It also works against depression,
fatigue and exhaustion.
The infusion is used in excessive night sweating,
mainly in tuberculosis and neurotics, as well as
for compresses on difficult-to-heal wounds,
varicose leg ulcers, as a bath refill in rheumatic
diseases, rashes and other skin problems. It
is also used to rinse the oropharynx thanks to
its bactericidal properties, it is effective in
purulent gingivitis, thrush and angina.
Leaf tea inhibits diarrhea.
