Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), also known as Dyer's Saffron, is a plant belonging to the aster family, characterized by its yellow-red flowers resembling thorns. It originates from South Asia and is commonly referred to as Hong-Hua in China. The main part used is the flower, which contains carthamin, an active substance belonging to the flavonoid group, as well as other components such as safflower yellow, isocarthamidin, safflor, and luteolin. For thousands of years, Carthamus tinctorius has been utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a remedy supporting proper circulation. Due to its high pigment content, safflower petals are widely employed for food coloring purposes. Infusions made from safflower are known to regulate the intensity of menstrual bleeding, promote the function of the entire circulatory system, strengthen blood vessel walls, and help maintain normal blood pressure. Dried safflower flowers can be added to dishes and beverages to impart a golden glow.

Recommended usage:

Infusion: Steep 1-2 grams of flowers (approximately a teaspoon) in 200 ml of boiling water, cover and let it steep for 20 minutes. Strain. Consume in two portions throughout the day. The infusion can also be used for skin washes.
