Clitoria Ternatea (Clitoria ternatea) is a tropical plant from the legume family that produces blue flowers remarkably resembling the shape of the female clitoris, hence its Latin name, Clitoria. It is native to Africa but currently also grows in warmer regions of Asia, Central America, and South America. The flowers of Clitoria are highly valued for their abundant anthocyanin content, powerful antioxidants that give the plant its intense blue color. Additionally, they contain flavonoids, lactones, phytosterols, and terpenoids. For ages, Clitoria has been used in traditional Eastern medicine as a remedy to enhance intellectual abilities, improve memory and concentration. Infusions made from its flowers were consumed for strengthening and improving eyesight, as well as for skin and hair care. In Asian countries, Clitoria has long been used in culinary applications as a blue coloring agent for desserts, rice, and cakes.
